JOURNAL ENTRY

Our travels moved us through a number of quarries being filled. Strange as it may seem, they didn't want us to photograph the process. The guard said there is a lot of competition among companies wanting to fill holes. I couldn't help but wonder how many ways there are to fill them.

The foothills in the distance grew larger as we walked by trees that grew tall and thin, cut off at the tops, standing like giant hedges.

As we walk along, each of us talks to people about this nation of ours. We speak with American citizens and guests from other countries. Each conversation makes it clear to me, THE WALK is likely the most important project we can work to create understanding and unity among our own citizens and world at large.

We spend so much time looking at the small differences that separate us, as we push to the back all those things that make us the same.

Most religions suggest "we love one another even as we love ourselves." That may be a wonderful idea. As a goal, it seems far too far away. Our Constitution only asks that we tolerate each other. Perhaps we should strive toward that goal -- even if we just consider it the first step.

The Arts District in Pomona is alive and well! This mural was painted by the
Arts School while the drummer here creates his own instruments from wood.

The foothills in the distance tell us we are moving away from the Pacific Coast.
